In an op-ed for The Vancouver Sun marking today’s 20^th anniversary of the province’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, BC Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham looks at the history of the law and the areas where reform and modernization are needed. Denham suggests the Document Disposal Act must be modernized to address public demand for transparency and accountability. Additionally, she calls for the province to anticipate the challenges of this age of Big Data, adding the province “should be more concerned with the magnitude and frequency of privacy breaches and data spills in the public and private sector.”
