Where should the line be drawn between granting law enforcement officials the tools they need to solve crimes and protecting the public's privacy? Seeking answers to this question, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), co-chairman of the Congressional Bipartisan Privacy Caucus, has sent a letter to eight major wireless carriers indicating his concern that police tracking of cell phone users "may violate the privacy rights of Americans." Markey is seeking data from the carriers on how many requests they have received from police for cell tracking and surveillance operations and whether warrants have been required, among other questions.
