Agencies Working Together To Update Act

HEALTHCARE PRIVACY—NEW ZEALAND

February 3, 2012

The privacy commissioner is working with the Law Commission to update the Privacy Act 1993, nzDoctor.co.nz reports. One recommendation submitted by the Law Commission would lower the "threshold at which personal information held by an agency can be released to another in order to allay a potential threat or harm," the report states. At a conference last year, Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff said her office supports the amendment as long as health-sector workers do not object. Shroff also told health-sector workers that they will have two opportunities to make amendment submissions--"first in the select committee and then when the bill gets considered by Parliament."
