With data breaches making headlines and getting more and more attention from federal regulators, Internet privacy will be a legislative priority for the next U.S. Congress. That's according to a statement by Rep. Joe L. Barton (R-TX), who wrote, "I want the Internet economy to prosper, but it can't unless the people's right to privacy means more than a right to hear excuses after the damage is done." The Washington Post reports that while questions have arisen about the future of privacy legislation following Tuesday's national election, government regulators in the U.S. and across the globe "are preparing to take a more aggressive role in enforcing privacy rules."
