Do Corporations Have the Same Privacy Rights as People?
PRIVACY LAW—U.S.September 29, 2010
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case involving AT&T Corp. to determine whether corporations are eligible for the same protection as individuals in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, The Wall Street Journal reports. The company is trying to keep private the records of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigation into billing practices after rival telecommunications companies filed FOIA requests for the records following the 2004 investigation. The FCC partly granted the request, the report states, but AT&T wants all the records kept private, stating it is entitled to the same "personal privacy" exemption as individuals under FOIA.
