FTC Reaches Settlement with Data Broker

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reached a settlement with the online data broker US Search after finding that the company failed to live up to its privacy promises. The company will reimburse 5,000 customers for fees they paid to "lock" their personal information, PCWorld reports. Also under the settlement, the company agrees to refrain from misrepresenting the "effectiveness of any service that purports to remove information about consumers from the broker's Web site," the FTC said in a press release. The 30-day comment period on the settlement began on Wednesday.
