Mayor Will Challenge Privacy Decision
PRIVACY LAW—CYPRUSFebruary 5, 2010
The mayor of a large Nicosia suburb says he will challenge the personal data commissioner's decision to prohibit the city from photographing vehicles that are illegally parked, reports Cyprus-Mail. Strovolos Mayor Savvas Eliophotou says the practice has helped the city collect fines from violators who challenged the fact they received a ticket. He says, "We were certain that no personal data was violated..." But Commissioner Youlla Frangou asked Eliophotou to terminate the program, saying that the photography and retention of photos violated the law. Eliophotou says, "I respect the decision and I implemented it, but I do not accept that it is correct."
