EDPS Adopts Opinion on Aviation Investigations

European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx adopted an opinion related to the data protection aspects of civil aviation accident investigations yesterday. The European Commission has proposed updated rules for such investigations. According to an EDPS press release, Hustinx welcomes that data protection was taken into account in the EC's proposal, but "more stringent safeguards are needed to protect individuals who are directly or indirectly affected by a serious accident or the loss of relatives." Hustinx recommends limiting the amount of time personal data is stored, keeping passenger lists confidential as a principle and transmitting personal data to third countries only if those countries have an adequate level of protection, among other improvements.
