The Office of Personnel Management has abandoned a plan to restrict the use of U.S. federal employees' Social Security numbers as primary identifiers, Next Gov reports. The plan, which aimed to help prevent identity theft, was deemed impractical unless alternative government-wide identifiers were to be assigned. Meanwhile, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said at a recent summit on healthcare fraud that the president's 2011 budget will include measures to fight identity theft.
