Privacy Breach Index
The Ponemon Institute and Hilb Rogal & Hobbs Company (HRH) have developed a Privacy Breach Indexâ„¢ (PBI), a benchmarking tool that helps measure organizations' responses to data loss or theft. The index is expected to help companies safeguard against a breach, assess areas of vulnerability and benchmark data breaches responses.

To develop the index, HRH and Ponemon surveyed 768 individuals involved in the data protection, IT security and compliance professions. Each respondent reported that his or her organization had experienced a data breach involving the loss or theft of customer, consumer or employee data in the past 24 months.

Other key survey findings included:

  • 80 percent of respondents believe that their organizations experienced some loss of customers or other data breach victims after the incident;
  • The number one root cause of data breach incidents reported by participants is employee negligence (50%), followed by third-party negligence (29%), followed by hackers and other criminal activity (4%);
  • Only 9% of respondents gave an "A" or excellent to their organization's overall performance in responding to their organization's most recent data breach incident. Thirty-one percent gave their organization a "B" or good.
