Dell is rolling out self-encrypting laptops. The company is building full disk encryption (FDE) drives into its Latitude and Precision notebooks, self-encrypting laptops, and the OptiPlex 960 desktop, according a report in The Register. If a machine is lost, stolen, or loaned, the drives will prevent any data loss, and since the encryption key never leaves the drive, it is not susceptible to cold boot attack.
