Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland
Billy Hawkes was appointed Irish data protection commissioner in 2005 for a five-year term. He was reappointed in 2010 for a further five years.
As data protection commissioner, he has responsibility for overseeing the implementation in Ireland of Irish and European Union data protection legislation. He is a member of the European Union’s Article 29 Working Party and the joint supervisory bodies of EUROPOL and EUROJUST.
In 2009, Hawkes was appointed chair the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files.
Prior to his appointment, Hawkes worked as a civil servant in a number of government departments.
