Wyndham Worldwide seeks dismissal of an FTC complaint on the grounds that the FTC overstepped its authority by using its consumer protection powers to regulate cybersecurity.
On February 23, 2012 the White House releases the “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights”, a set of guidelines to improve online consumer privacy while ensuring the Internet remains a forum for economic growth.
The IAPP’s Global Privacy Summit is again held in Washington, DC in March, drawing the largest gathering of privacy professionals in the world.
Former Privacy Commissioner of Australia Malcolm Crompton is honored at the Summit with the 2012 Privacy Leadership Award for his significant achievements and forward thinking on the handling and governance of personal information.
In March 2012, the IAPP reaches 10,000 members.
On April 25–26 IAPP Europe launches its first UK conference, the Data Protection Intensive.
In spring 2012 the IAPP begins offering computer-based testing for its certification programs in more than 600 locations around the world.
The IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium 2012—the largest Symposium to date—is held in Toronto, May 9–11.
The Practical Privacy Series visits Chicago and New York with Data Breach, Financial Services and an all-new Marketing and Advertising program. The Practical Privacy Series: Government returns to Washington, DC on December 3–4.
The Privacy Academy is held in California at the San Jose Convention Center on October 10–11 in conjunction with the Privacy Dinner and Navigate.
Sandra R. Hughes, CIPP/US, is awarded the 2012 IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award for her effectiveness in developing a model to operationalize privacy and ethics across a multinational enterprise.
The IAPP presents Privacy Innovation Awards to Vodafone, Alberta Pensions Services Corporation, Compliance Consulting and Resources, and Oculis Labs at the annual IAPP Privacy Dinner.
The annual IAPP Europe Data Protection Congress is held in Brussels, Belgium on November 13–15.
