The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will hold a public workshop on the topic in November. FTC Commissioner Julie Brill says that as the benefits of Big Data reveal themselves, it’s essential to let them develop “within an ecosystem that garners consumer trust by safeguarding privacy.” Existing principles and legal standards apply to smart devices, Brill writes, but how they should apply is the question.
