The Australian reports on a discovery by researchers of a “treasure trove” of confidential data on discarded memory sticks, including sensitive Australian government data. The researchers, who are part of the Security Research Institute at Perth’s Edith Cowan University, are warning sellers to beware that such sensitive data can remain on memory sticks. “The results show that sellers are sending memory cards with no evidence of erasure, poor attempts to erase data—or simply asking the buyer to erase the data prior to use,” the study states.
