The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has ordered two telephone marketing companies to change their practices after more than 100 complaints were made to the ICO that the companies were making nuisance marketing calls.

It is understood that the true number of total complaints made against Isisbyte Limited and SLM Connect Limited may be far higher, as the ICO found evidence that both companies have been making nuisance calls whilst failing to correctly identify themselves.

All of the calls were made between January 2013 and February 2014. At the time, SLM had contracted Isisbyte to carry out a marketing campaign on its behalf. However SLM took no steps to make sure Isisbyte was complying with the law, with both companies also conducting marketing calls on their own behalves.

The ICO investigation found that both organisations were not only calling individuals who had already registered with the UK Telephone Preference Service's telephone marketing opt-out register but also attempted to hide their identities by routinely telling individuals that they were calling from a different company.

Both companies were issued with enforcement notices ordering them to improve their practices. The notices are available to view here.
