The New York Times reports on a recently passed Montana bill that requires police to obtain a search warrant before determining a suspect’s location based on cellphone carrier records. Realizing the value of metadata and the ability of cellphones to track our daily movements, Montana’s governor signed the location information privacy bill—reportedly the first of its kind in the nation—into law on May 6. Other states are working to pass similar bills. Maine’s version is on its way to the governor’s desk, and Massachusetts will hold a legislative hearing on a similar measure next week.
