The Washington Post reports on the National Security Agency’s (NSA) gathering of nearly five billion records per day on cellphone locations around the world. According to documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the documents’ details are stored in a vast database, and new tools to analyze the data have resulted in mass surveillance as the agency is capable of tracing cellphones globally and retracing movements. Privacy advocates have concerns about the agency’s ability to establish relationships between phone users based on such data. Chris Soghoian of the ACLU said the only way to hide your location is to “live in a cave.” Meanwhile, a Brown University panel recently discussed NSA spying and how sophisticated government agencies have become in analyzing such data.
