The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has appointed Ohio State University Law Prof. Peter Swire, CIPP/US, as co-chair of the Tracking Protection Working Group—a group charged with defining the Do-Not-Track (DNT) protocol and establishing an agreement on what a DNT signal will mean in practice. The Wall Street Journal reports that chances of a DNT deal by the end of the year are slim. The Center for Digital Democracy’s Jeffrey Chester said, “It’s a sinking ship,” while the Digital Advertising Alliance’s Stuart P. Ingis noted the process is broken. Previous Working Group Co-Chair Aleecia McDonald, a Stanford privacy researcher, said she supports the new leadership in the face of what has recently become a “very contentious” process.
