The New York Times reports on efforts to improve facial recognition technologies capable of sensing human emotions such as anger, sadness and frustration. Affective computing is currently being developed to assess a wide range of applications from reading student interest in the classroom to helping those on the autism spectrum understand the emotions of others. Emotionally aware devices, however, give “many people the creeps,” the report states. Oxford University Future of Humanity Institute Director Nick Bostrom said, “We want to have some control over how we display ourselves to others,” adding, “it’s not obvious the world would be a better place” with such technology.
