The New York Times reports on the campaign against Do Not Track. Nine U.S. lawmakers recently wrote to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voicing concern over restricting the flow of data “at the heart of the Internet’s success.” The Association of National Advertisers and the Interactive Advertising Bureau have both voiced opposition to Microsoft’s default Do-Not-Track mechanism. The Digital Advertising Alliance has said self-regulation is working and should be given a chance to succeed. FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said the disagreement on standards could lead to a privacy arms race with browsers rushing to give consumers the most privacy protections, which may not be a bad thing, he added.
