And without policy changes from government and major sites, "this is the way the Internet, and society at large, is headed," she says. But big data is valuable to both companies and government, with government using social media sites to monitor for potential criminal activity, for example, and companies using personal data analytics to improve profits. "Governments will continue to comb through and analyze personal data for their own ends, and this is highly unlikely to slow down or stop," Knibbs predicts.
