Applying Standards, Literacy to Data Science

In The New York Times, Quentin Hardy writes about emerging aspects of big data. As it grows, "it is easy to miss how much remains to do before the industry has proven standards," he writes, adding, "There is essential work to be done training a core of people in very hard problems..." Additionally, a "broad-based literacy" should be applied to the use of big data, including better management and information-reading tools as well as "privacy safeguards for corporate and personal information." Researcher danah boyd said, "we have very low levels of computational literacy, data literacy, media literacy, and all of these are contributing" to fears of big data.
