DOC's Kerry Discusses White House Framework

PRIVACY LAW—U.S. & EU

February 28, 2012

The success of the White House's recently released framework for its privacy bill of rights will depend in part on allowing businesses and regulators to take the lead and on consumer education, said Department of Commerce General Counsel Cameron Kerry from Brussels this week. The plan is slightly different from the European Commission's top-down approach, reports Dow Jones Newswire. However, "This is not simply self-regulation," Kerry said, "we are, like the commission, proposing legislation and trying to get that adopted. This code of conduct will be legally enforceable by the Federal Trade Commission." The U.S. looks forward to working with the EU on interoperability, Kerry said.
