Megan Hertzler's path to privacy was sort of an accident. Hertzler started at the Minnesota Attorney General's Office as counsel to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) but says there wasn't a great emphasis on customer privacy back in 1997. Today, she's the assistant general counsel and director of data privacy at Xcel Energy, a position she more or less self-designed at a time when there wasn't really a model for a privacy-specific position at an energy company.
