The New York Times reports on Epic Systems and the company's history of digitizing electronic health records. Helping keep track of 40 million patient records, the organization supplies some of the largest healthcare providers with software, training and support. Judith Faulkner, Epic's chief executive, who serves as an industry representative on a government panel that is examining health data privacy and security issues, seeks a balance between privacy and easy access to patient records. "I'm worried if we put up too many barriers in order to make things private," she said, "and if that makes the flow of information slow and hard to share, in effect more people will be harmed."
