Describing online privacy as "an issue of central importance for businesses in every industry," Financial Times explores the efforts of policymakers to strengthen existing privacy laws and introduce new ones as Internet technologies evolve ahead of legislation. "The rules differ widely from country to country, with varying degrees of enforcement," the report states, noting that from the sectoral privacy regulations of the U.S. to those "stricter laws" in place in such countries as the UK, Germany and Canada, "the large and growing body of different national privacy regimes means that multinational businesses operating in many markets, face an increasingly difficult task in complying with them all."
