Noting that "the tools to control our digital privacy and protect valuable personal data are not in our hands," Calgary Herald columnist Lee Rickwood adds that "the idea of designing privacy controls into digital products or online services is at the very least an appropriate consideration." With existing tracking technologies that follow users who are not logged in, "Users should not have to 'go deep' into a computer program or Internet activity log to find out about online tracking tools used by a given site or its third-party partners."
