Reps. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Joe Barton (R-TX) have called for an investigation into the use of "supercookies" by websites, The Washington Post reports. In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the co-chairmen of the House Bipartisan Privacy Caucus said the technology could violate the FTC's "unfair and deceptive acts of practices" rule, adding, "We believe this new business practice raises serious privacy concerns and is unacceptable...the usage of supercookies takes away consumer control over their own personal information, presents a greater opportunity for misuse of personal information and provides another way for consumers to be tracked online."
