Opinion: Online Privacy Legislation Needed

"Considering how much information we entrust to the Internet every day, it is hard to believe there is no general law to protect people's privacy online." That's the message of an editorial in The New York Times that examines recent calls for federal privacy legislation to protect consumers with a "privacy bill of rights." Meanwhile, some experts are questioning exactly which federal body will become the "Internet police." Examining the push-and-pull around broad-based privacy legislation, the editorial looks at the various proposals coming forward, stating, "It is crucial that lawmakers get this right...Privacy protections are long overdue.
