Thilo Weichert, director of the Independent Center for Data Protection of Schleswig Holstein, presented a proposal before the German Lawyers Association on Wednesday for legislation that would regulate data protection on the Internet. Central to the proposal is a provision that requires the question of digital publication of personal data to be dependent upon a balancing between freedom of expression and data protection laws. In describing the proposal, Weichert stated in part, "Our draft should free the current discussion from a fixation on geo data and direct attention to significant and mutual problems of data protection."
