While Regulators Bear Down, Consumers Sign Up

On the surface, the actions of German data protection regulators don't seem to reflect the sentiment of consumers in that country, where Facebook and Google--two companies under investigation by data protection regulators there--are popular, The New York Times reports. "I think many people in Germany...do not have as many problems with data protection as the regulators are making out," said a 21-year-old college student. But experts say that while the dichotomy is unlikely to lead to a loosening of the country's strict privacy rules, lowering barriers for online marketing could help encourage economic growth.
