While the European Commission and national governments favour e-health as a mechanism to drive down healthcare costs and improve patient care, "the potential can only be enjoyed in practice if we are successful in ensuring a strong trust...and a strong protection of health data." That is the message being shared by European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx as privacy advocates continue to raise concerns about e-health. European Voice reports on fears that "policymakers' enthusiasm for e-health may compromise sensitive patient information, which can be easily copied and transferred once it is in electronic form."
