Shell Employees' Data Leaked to Advocacy Groups
DATA LOSSFebruary 12, 2010
Contact information for 176,000 employees and contractors of Royal Dutch Shell has been sent to environmental and human rights campaign groups, the Financial Times reports. The information, which included names and telephone numbers, was e-mailed with a note alleging it was being sent by "116 concerned employees of Shell Oil dispersed throughout the USA, the UK and the Netherlands" to highlight the harm allegedly done by the company's operations in Nigeria, the report states. It is not known whether the claim that employees sent the information is true. Shell has stated the breach does not pose a security risk because the information, which is about six months old, does not include home addresses.
