Seek Legal Counsel before Moving to Cloud, Department Says

The Department of Finance has sent an e-mail to government departments and public-sector bodies warning them to seek legal advice before purchasing cloud computing services, the Irish Times reports. The e-mail says that the Chief State Solicitor's Office has advised that data protection in the cloud is not "necessarily dealt with in a manner that would be necessary for public-sector responsibilities." Last year, the minister for communications included cloud computing as one of six technology actions to support the smart economy, the report states.
