British Columbia Acting Privacy Commissioner Paul Fraser is pointing to last year's breach involving the personal information of 1,400 welfare recipients as an example of why the provincial government should move quickly to appoint a new chief privacy officer (CPO), the Canadian Press reports. Fraser noted in a recent report on the breach that the ministries responsible for the data involved had failed to make adequate security arrangements to protect the information, and although the breach was discovered in April, nothing was done about it until October. Such breaches, he says, show the government needs a CPO to ensure privacy breaches are dealt with appropriately.
