Privacy Commissioner, Security Expert Disagree over Durham Health Report

Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian has denounced criticism of her report on Durham Health Region's recent loss of a memory stick containing data on thousands of patients, itWorldCanada reports. Although he agrees with Cavoukian's assertion that data stored on memory sticks or laptops be encrypted, Fiaaz Walji of Websense Inc. said last week that more must be done. Encryption is essential, Cavoukian responded, because of the number of breaches involving the loss of portable devices. "To suggest that the only thing the order did was to order the encryption of health data I think is really incomplete," she said, pointing out other requirements including employee training on data access, management and minimization.
