DATA LOSSFebruary 5, 2010
Brock University officials were alerted to a breach involving personal data from its approximately 17,000 students after one student was able to access his own information through an Internet search, The Standard reports. A staff member accidentally uploaded a file containing all student names, student numbers, phone numbers, mailing and e-mail addresses to the university's public Web site on December 22, but the breach was not discovered until January 28. The university has deleted the file and contacted the search engine to have the data erased from archives or indexes, and a university spokesman confirmed the privacy commissioner has been informed "to ensure that all obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act are fulfilled."
