Two full-body scanners have been installed at Vancouver's airport, and a third is scheduled for installment soon, the Vancouver Sun reports. Only U.S.-bound passengers selected for a secondary screening are scanned. Some civil liberties groups say the machines, which produce a revealing image of the person scanned, are an invasion of privacy. However, the Office of the federal Privacy Commissioner says the scanning does not invade personal privacy because the images appear anonymously to an officer in a separate room. At a January news conference, Transport Minister John Baird said that for Canadians, "the idea of going through an electronic machine is far more comfortable and less invasive...than an invasive physical pat-down."
