ATL to Improve Info Security after Breach
DATA LOSS—UKFebruary 5, 2010
The ICO has found the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) in breach of the Data Protection Act after a laptop and memory stick containing personal information on more than 6,000 union members were reported missing. Neither device was encrypted, but the laptop was password protected, the ICO reports. The ATL has signed an undertaking requiring the encryption of all portable devices used to store and transmit personal information by the end of this month. The undertaking also requires the ATL to review its policy on the transfer and storage of personal information and to make staff aware they may not store such information on their own memory sticks.
