A national medical records database could jeopardize the personal information of more than 300 million Americans, 2008 Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr writes in an Atlanta Journal Constitution op-ed. A recent Ponemon Institute survey with 850 respondents from 45 states indicated 75 percent do not support the creation of the government database, while 56 percent want more stringent privacy protection laws, Barr notes, writing that recent healthcare privacy breaches, such as HealthNet's November report that it had lost 1.5 million patient records, offer "a peek at what could be expected to happen with thousands of federal bureaucrats compiling, maintaining, sharing and otherwise manipulating health records of the most private nature imaginable on every citizen."
