Sun Microsystems executive receives top honor
During an intimate dinner celebration at the IAPP Privacy Academy in Boston last month, Michelle Dennedy received the 2009 Goodwin Procter-IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award.

The Vanguard Award recognizes the individual who has best demonstrated outstanding leadership, knowledge, and creativity in privacy and data protection. Dennedy was selected for her privacy leadership at Sun, where she created and built the company’s global privacy program and co-founded its internal “privacy council,” among other accomplishments.

Currently, Dennedy serves as Sun’s chief governance officer, cloud computing. She is responsible for strategy and planning around all data governance issues such as privacy, security, policy, and export control relating to cloud computing products and services.

“Michelle  is the epitome of a privacy professional,” said Goodwin Procter Counsel Agnes Bundy Scanlan, CIPP, who presented the award. “Michelle’s privacy achievements and contributions have been significant at Sun Microsystems and to our industry.”

On accepting the honor, Dennedy thanked the individuals—her “brothers in privacy”—whom she says have been instrumental to her success. She also shared what drives her privacy efforts, saying that people deserve to live in a world where their “information is treated with respect.”
