Four days. Five cities. Five-thousand kilometers.

I write this month having recently returned from the weeklong launch of IAPP Canada. At stops in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, I had the pleasure of meeting many Canadian privacy professionals face-to-face, including federal and provincial regulators who participated in launch events during the week.
The creation of IAPP Canada is the natural next step in serving this sophisticated and growing contingent and the excitement at these events was real. We are so pleased to have boots on the ground in this nation whose leadership in data privacy is highly regarded around the world.

If anyone has an ear to the pulse of the Canadian data privacy scene, it is our IAPP Canada Managing Director Kris Klein. An experienced privacy attorney, author, and former counsel for the federal privacy commissioner, Kris, along with the IAPP Canadian Education Advisory Board will ensure that the needs of Canadian data privacy pros are continually exceeded.

The flagship IAPP Canada event—the Canadian Privacy Summit—takes place later this month in Toronto. In addition to sessions on PIPEDA and cross-border data transfers; employee privacy; log files and electronic discovery, and many more, we are excited to welcome some of Canada’s most influential privacy minds. Federal privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart; University of Ottawa Professor Ian Kerr; and Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian will present keynotes at the event.

I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Sincerely,

J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP
Executive Director, IAPP
