Behavioral videosurveillance in the Paris subway

Civil Society Groups* are strongly opposing the implementation of four “intelligent” advertising LCD screens in one of the most frequented Paris subway stations (pending the 400 screens which will soon be put in place in Paris undergrounds, before reaching the surface). These screens can not only broadcast messages or videos of multiple advertisers, but also count the number of people passing nearby and measure the time they spend looking at the screens thanks to a face-scanning sensor.
They see this tool as an illegal diversion of a video surveillance system for commercial purposes.

More is yet to come: the screens enclose a Bluetooth connection which will transfer advertising messages directly to subway riders’ mobile phones. At the moment, the device is not activated.

The Parisian Transportation Company, RATP, responded that the screens will not collect any personal data and include a mere counting system.
A court action is being considered. To be followed…
