The Oregon Senate has passed legislation to bar law enforcement from using drones to collect information without a warrant except in specified situations, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. "Drone technology shouldn't enable law enforcement with a tool to circumvent the warrant process," said Sen. Chip Shields (D-Portland), the bill’s sponsor.

Some say the bill does not address all the privacy and legal issues surrounding drone use, while others question the state’s authority on some elements.

In its current form, the bill allows for use of drones to track suspects fleeing crime scenes, survey environmental disasters, assist with search and rescue missions and reconstruct crime scenes. It also requires public bodies to register drones with the Oregon Department of Aviation and prohibits weapons on drones.

The bill now goes back to the House, which will consider the changes made by the Senate.
