Target says its computer system had alerted it to a breach last year, but the company chose to ignore it, resulting in one of the largest data breaches on record, The New York Times reports. “With the benefit of hindsight, we are investigating whether, if different judgments had been made, the outcome may have been different,” said Target’s Molly Snyder. Target had installed security software by FireEye, which worked as designed and sent out alarms as hackers uploaded tools to steal customers’ personal data. But the company evaluated the activity and “determined that it did not warrant immediate follow-up,” Snyder said. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
