The Wall Street Journal reports today on new data privacy trends inspired by Edward Snowden’s NSA revelations, including a new “Email Made in Germany” service created by three of Germany’s largest Internet service providers. "We can say that we protect the e-mail inbox according to German law," says Jorg Fries-Lammers, a spokesman for one of the German companies, 1&1 Internet AG. "It's definitely a unique selling point." Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg pronounced herself “nervous” about these kinds of developments. "It means fragmenting the Internet and putting the economic and social opportunities it creates at risk." President of Brazil H. E. Dilma Rousseff even went so far as to call for “the establishment of a civilian multilateral framework for the governance and use of the Internet and to ensure the effective protection of data that travels through the web” in a speech before the United Nations. The NSA news is leading to tech innovation as well. John McAfee announced this week he is developing personal gadgetry that will protect the user from NSA spying.
