Public awareness of privacy issues has steadily grown over the last few years, and after a long list of disclosures from former government contractor Edward Snowden, privacy has made its way into the mainstream. This paradigm shift was on display at the South by Southwest (SXSW) group of music, film and interactive conferences in Austin, TX, and at TED2014 in Vancouver, Canada—two well-known and influential annual conferences. Fittingly, Snowden made remote appearances at both conferences, even garnering a direct response at TED2014 from National Security Agency Deputy Director Richard Ledgett. “So there you have it,” writes the IAPP’s Jedidiah Bracy, CIPP/US, CIPP/E, “perhaps the quintessential privacy debate happening almost in real time at TED2014.” This Privacy Perspectives post rounds up the implications of privacy’s mainstream moments.
