Australian Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim has said Global ID card supplier Multicard’s decision to store the personal information of 9,000 Australian Maritime Security Identify Card applicants on a publicly accessible web server breached the Privacy Act, Computerworld reports. Pilgrim launched an investigation in February after it was discovered applicants’ names, dates of birth, partial credit card numbers and photos were available online for four months. The breach could have been “easily avoided,” Pilgrim said, but the company “failed to take reasonable steps.”
