Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian has accepted a position as director of Ryerson University’s new Institute for Privacy and Big Data. Cavoukian has served as the province's privacy commissioner for the last 15 years and helped create Privacy by Design, an international standard for privacy protection that promotes baking privacy protections into products at the design level.

The new institute is designed to promote the development of technologies that analyze data within a privacy-protected sphere, provide an educational platform to disseminate the techniques and procedures of privacy-enhanced Big Data analytics through research programs and provide an incubation platform for start-up companies to utilize the technologies for new applications and new markets.

Cavoukian will begin her new role on July 1, and the new Ryerson Institute for Privacy and Big Data will launch in the 2014-2015 academic year.
